Back in October 2012 my Foodie Pen Pal sent me a Vanilla Infusion Kit.

I could not wait to get it going. So I grabbed my Vodka and Vanilla Infusion Kit and got mixing. I was so excited to break this open and Make My Own. I had no idea something like this was even available. All you do to make your own is split the vanilla bean and fill with vodka. Then you store for 4 to 6 months, and BOOM you have your very own 7 year supply of Vanilla.  The key to making it last 7 years is to keep adding vodka to the bottle as you use it.

What makes homemade vanilla extract so much better than “store-bought”? First, you have control over the quality and type of vanilla used in the extract. Using premium grade vanilla beans will provide significantly better flavor and aroma than commercially produced extracts.  Simply take the 7 whole vanilla beans out of your infusion kit, split each bean lengthwise and add 8 ounces of 35%+ alcohol.  Any type of alcohol can be used, but bottom shelf vodka is most common because it will not add any additional flavors to the extract. Bourbon, rum and brandy can also be used. After 8 weeks, the vast majority of the extraction process is complete. For complete infusion 8 months is a typical time frame.  Once the vanilla is ready to use the vanilla beans can be removed, but If the vanilla beans are left in the bottle, the flavor will continue to evolve (just be sure the beans are always submerged in alcohol).

Well….Here is the fruit of my labor, and I love that it only required the labor of fill and wait.

033

So I had to test it out!

014

I made a Biscoff – Yogurt Vanilla Infused Fruit Dip.

013

INGREDIENTS

  • 2  6-ounces Greek yogurt with honey  (can use with any yogurt with or without honey)
  • 2 tablespoon crunchy biscoff spread or any nut butter
  • 1/2 tablespoon infused vanilla extract
  • 1/8 teaspoon cinnamon
  • Add what you like…this recipe is so easy to incorporate YOUR favorite flavors

DIRECTIONS

  1. Mix all the ingredients in a bowl. Serve with sliced apples, berries and assorted fruits.
  2. Store unused portion in the fridge for 2-3 days.

* I have frozen this dip before and it thaws well. Just be ready to whip it up as it thaws to get back the original texture.

I make this little dip often and I have to say that my favorite version is this one. The combination of the crunchy biscoff and my new vanilla extract really gave it a fun crunch and a warm vanilla flavor.

So this year like every other year I make my own Bug Spray. I am a huge DIY fan when it comes to Health and Beauty product. I am always whipping up a bath oil or a salt rub and have a really big selection of my own essential oils.

118

It’s actually a fun and easy process when you have all the ingredients on hand, Just add to a jar, mix and funnel into spray bottles.

119

I keep plenty on hand for the season. Living near water you really have to be prepared.

125

Here’s the Recipe I Use:

  • 4 ounces Witch Hazel
  • 4 Ounces Water
  • 1/2 Tablespoon Vegetable Glycerin
  • 15 Drops Tea Tree Oil
  • 15 Drops Citronella Oil
  • 15 Drops Peppermint Oil
  • 15 Drops Eucalyptus Oil
  • 15 Drops Lemon Oil

Mix, Shake Well and put in spray bottles.

Spray usually lasts for a few hours, but is safe to reapply several times throughout the day.

It also has a nice fresh and clean scent!

This spray works well most of the time. On some hot and humid days the mosquitoes seemed unstoppable and were not even bothered by the spray, but on most days it works very effectively. It was a wet and humid summer so I felt like the mosquitoes were at the top of the food chain, I still prefer it to any other bug spray out on the market because I know its safe and also that its natural. Enough Bug Talk…Lets talk about my dogs.

Stuart got a few new toys! I am a huge fan of Jenna Marbles YouTube Videos and her dogs. So when I found out she was selling stuffed dog toys that resembled her own dogs I snatched them up for my kids.

141

They were a Huge Hit. Jenna’s dogs are named Mr. Marbles and Kermit. Ginger loved Kermit who is gray and Stuart loves Mr. Marbles…I love them both. My not so secret dream is to have 4 dogs so this sort of makes that dream come true.

143

Now on to some other fun doggie news. Ginger took her first pontoon boat ride and loved it. She was checking out the birds, ducks and the other boaters all afternoon. She had the best day ever. She’s a natural sailor.

148

Stuart showing Ginger the ropes. He gave her some good pointers, but also some not so good. He alerted her to the golfers and how to announce himself! Yep, she followed suit. The golfers love that (NOT).

158

Stuart is use to a nap during the day so he found his spot and grabbed some zzz’s.

159

Ginger carried on without him and never sat down once, she was really into the happenings on the lake.

164

Boy that was a fun day on the lake, and the best part was I did not need my Homemade bug spray, I had it with me, but never used it. It was a beautiful bug free day.

Hope you’re enjoying the weather in your area, and had a good season. I sure loved all the outdoor time I had.
