I recently got my sprouts on. I have a set of Sprouting Jars and its been a while since I sprouted so I thought a Spring sprout was needed. The variety of seeds I am using is a 3 part mix of Alfalfa, Radish and Broccoli. So they are a much small sprout than the Mung bean sprouts you typically find in the vegetable section at the grocery store.

I added 1/4 cup of seeds to my jar and then 4 cups of warm water which you soak for 6-8 hours. After the 6-8 hours you just drain the water and rinse the seeds and then store in a warm dark location for 3 days. You must rinse the seeds two to three times per day during the sprouting cycle.

224

The easy straining caps makes it convenient to strain fresh water to the sprouts.

227

This little amount of seeds will produce a huge amount of sprouts.

226

Here are my sprouts after only one day. I rinsed them twice and left out on the counter to soak up some sun for an hour, that seems to help green up the sprouts. It is recommendation but is not necessary.

236

Here are my sprouts on day two. Wow, this is going to be a huge amount of sprouts.

237

Here are my sprouts on day three. They are ready to be strained, stored and consumed.

267

Just soaking in water and gently swishing around does a good job of getting the hulls to float up.

270

Sprouts are ready to be served.

274

My all time favorite way to eat them is on a piece of pita bread with hummus.

Basic Sprouting Instructions:

How to Grow Sprouts in a Jar

Growing sprouts in a jar is easy. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Place one to two tablespoons of seeds in your jar, and cover with approximately two inches of warm water. Let this sit 6-8 hours or overnight depending on the sprouting seed you are using.
  2. Drain the water, using a sprouting jar with the draining lid or just use a fine sieve or cheesecloth.
  3. Rinse the seeds by adding water the jar, swishing the seeds around, and draining.
  4. Repeat twice a day, every day until your sprouts are the desired size. This will take anywhere from three to seven days, depending on the variety of sprout you’re growing. Sprouts are best when they’re still fairly small and just starting to turn green.
  5. Store your sprouts in a covered bowl or food storage bag with a paper towel inside to absorb excess moisture. Use the sprouts within a week.

    Stubbs+ Grill=Summer Fun and Food.

Now onto another summer favorite. Chopped Salads and Beer.

Chop Salad! That seems to be my current addiction. I’ve made one almost every day since the Michigan Bloggers Meet-Up.

018

I used recipes from here and here. I just chopped away and added as much or little of each of the ingredients below. No measuring.

Ingredients:

  • 1 Bag Mixed Lettuce
  • Shredded Carrots
  • Shredded Red Cabbage
  • Chopped Chives
  • Goat Cheese Crumbles -or- Blue Cheese Crumbles
  • Wonton Strips
  • Bolthouse chunky Blue Cheese Yogurt Dressing
  • Dried Cranberries and Honey Roasted Pecans
  • Chopped Chicken Breast

015

directions:

Chop lettuce in 1/2-inch squares. Mix lettuce with the chopped carrots, and cabbage. Toss in the pecans and  dried cranberries with the dressing. Add the tortilla strips, goat cheese or blue cheese crumbles, and chives. Serve in a chilled bowl.  Top with sliced grilled chicken breast.

Also had a Applebee’s Chop Salad and a Beer. Loved this salad. It had tortilla strips, black beans, chopped chicken and the dressing was zippy and creamy.

027

I am so hooked on Blue Moon Beer right now, it’s so refreshing and light.

I must share something, I have a New Food Love.  It’s with Wheat Berries.

But First Check out my New Tea Mug. It’s a wide mouth mason jar with a Cuppow Lid. I love it. I received the Cuppow lid in one of my Vegan Conscious Boxes. On a cold day the mason jar also doubles as a hand warmer.

004

My new tea mug sure does complement my Oats in a Jar, Jar! I love jars, containers, bins, baskets and anything else that stores and organizes items. I love glass jars for food storage and serving food.

006

So on to the Wheat Berries. I found these in the bulk bin section at Whole Foods and needed to try them out. I love grains and this is one I have not tried.

020

After soaking them overnight, I drained and rinsed. Then add 2-1/2 cups of water and boiled for 35 minutes. NOTE: Just make sure that you do not let all the water boil out. Stir occasionally. I kept my eye on them the entire cook time, I made the mistake once and walked away while boiling rice, and all the water boiled out and I had a terrible mess in my saucepan. NEVER AGAIN.

021

They are very chewy with a nutty flavor, they are now on my favorite list. Not sure why I waited so long to try them. Oh yeah, I know why…The closest Whole Foods is 40 some miles away from me and I have not found them anywhere else. Well now that I know, I can stock up and keep on hand. Win, Win.

I have been adding a 1/4 of a cup of cooked wheat berries to my Oats in a Jar Oatmeal.

014

Here’s some helpful information I found on Wheat Berries over at The Food Network.

Wheat berries are a true whole grain! You may not recognize the name, but without these kernels, there would be no flour. Wheat berries are loaded with nutrients and are as easy as rice to prepare — perfect for a meal any time of year.

What are wheat berries?
Wheat berries are whole wheat kernels. They look like thick, short grains — similar to brown rice. Industrious folks grind them into whole wheat flour for baking; you may not have the time to regularly grind your own flour, but it’s a fun thing to try at least once.

When boiled, cooked wheat berries have a chewy bite and subtle nutty, earthy flavor. They’re sturdy enough to handle bold salad dressings and still delicate enough to taste delicious with some milk, honey and cinnamon.

If you like sprouts on salads and sandwiches, add a little water to wheat berries and you can grow your own wheat sprouts.

Why are wheat berries “Healthy Eats”?
Since the wheat kernel is left intact, virtually none of the nutrients are stripped away. A cup of cooked wheat berries has about 300 calories and is packed with fiber, protein and iron. Tasty sprouts are loaded with vitamin E, a cell-protecting antioxidant, and magnesium, which is good for healthy bones and muscles.

What do you do with wheat berries?
Look for wheat berries at a health food store or in the natural foods section of your local supermarket.

Prepare wheat berries in boiling water — just like other grains. Add cooked wheat berries to soups or even chili. Serve hot as a side dish with hearty mushrooms or cold for a satisfying salad full of flavor and whole grain goodness. Wheat berries have nutty flavor so they’re great with fresh vegetables and dried fruit such as cherries or cranberries.

Now here some of my snacks from the week.

Kale Chips, always a favorite.

006

Hail Merry Macaroons I received in my Vegan Conscious Box. Chocolate Craving CRUSHED by these little Macs.

008

I made my husband this Decadent Apple Caramel Cake. He saw it while grocery shopping and added it to the cart. (?)

011

It was good, but really sweet. He loved it, and that’s all that matters, sometimes you have to indulge on not so homemade, not so healthy items. At least I used my Egglands Best Eggs…

017

* Since finding the Wheat Berries and cooking with them I have now located them at a Health Food Store NEAR my home! Dale’s Natural Foods Store in Flint Michigan. I shop here often and turns out they have carried them all along, I guess I just never looked carefully enough in the Bulk Grain Bin Section. Apparently my Observation skills are at an all time LOW.

Special Deliveries…Love them, Good eats…Love them. Especially if they are a special delivery with good eats in them! Also love having a good time. Here are a few of all the above.

I recently subscribed to a Vegan Monthly Delivery Box called Conscious Box. Here’s their Mission.

The Mission of Conscious Box

Conscious Box is dedicated to introducing you to the most ethical, sustainable, and honest businesses that create the purest products available. We scour the marketplace to find those that stand above the rest. Discovery defines the Conscious Box experience.

I was so excited when the box arrived I could not wait to share it with you. Look at all these goodies…While I am not Vegan, or even vegetarian, I am currently working on how I live my life and choices I make. I realize that you have to start somewhere.

This box was loaded with great items. Teas, coffee, chocolate, snacks, and hb&a items. It was nicely packaged and the quality and quantity was amazing.

Sharing time… I made a really great crab sandwich the other day. Delicious.

Seriously, it was delicious. I added a side of roasted broccoli, but this sandwich could have stood alone on the plate.

One of my favorite lunches lately has been a ham and egg salad. I have been finding fresh spinach and sprouts at the farmers market along with some cucumbers and avocados and just mixing it all together and enjoying.

Recently I won a giveaway on Erin Berries Blog for Rebootizer. I have started it and cannot wait to do a quick review on it once I have completed the detox plan.

My amazing friends at Chobani sent me a 6 pack of their 16 ounce blended flavors. Okay here’s where the gushing comes in. I love this company, they are amazing friends to us bloggers, and on top of that their products are GREAT. I absolutely am in love with the Vanilla Chocolate Chunk.

I did share approximately 2 teaspoons with my husband, I felt like in order to do an honest review I had to eat the rest! Then I started in on the Mango. I really love the blended flavors. I have always been a huge fan of Chobani’s fruit on the bottom Pineapple flavor, but now feel like I should alternate my Chobani love to the blended yogurt as well. I am planning a few post with some of the ways I enjoyed the Chobani yogurt other than straight out of the container. What can I say, I  sometimes can’t help myself. Once it hits your lipsit’s so good! (Old School Movie Reference). Sorry.

I have been on a roll with blog giveaways lately and hit it BIG with the next two prizes. First up I won a $50.00 gift card to Lululemon. One of my favorite bloggers Calee from Life + Running was hosting this giveaway, and I could not have been happier when she notified my that I had won. I am so looking forward to spending that gift card. When Lululemon sent me the gift card they also sent me a reusable bag that I think I will use as my lunch bag and a change purse. Loving them lots right now.

My next big prize was from Rachael at Passing Daisies. I have been reading Rachael’s blog for a long time and love her dedication to honest blogging.  She really has well written posts with some great recipes. So back to the prize, I won these Zaggora HotPants. I was really pumped about these HotPants and put them to the test and loved them. Here’s some information on them taken directly from their webpage.

HotPants increase energy expenditure during exercise by 6% versus the control garment. HotPants increase energy expenditure in the hour after exercise by 26%*.

In 30 minutes of exercise, weight loss is around 4x greater in HotPants than in a standard garment. On average, subjects lost 1.13% of body mass in HotPants compared to 0.27% in the control garment.

HotPants increase the core body temperature by an average of 18% more than the control garment, which leads to an increase in metabolism.

I ordered the Orange, because it’s so HOT right now. Nah, I just love Orange. How cute are they? I can tell you this from just wearing them once, I sure did sweat more doing the same workout I normally do. So I will have to keep you posted on them. They have a Take the Challenge for new users of the HotPants. So me loving a challenge is all in. What they expect is just this: Wear the pants a few times a week during exercise and share your results! Easy. Like I said I am all in. So I will share my experience here with you once I have completed said challenge. Orange HotPants are so hot right now! Just saying.

Now on to a few of the good times I was talking about earlier. Hit a Tigers game with my husband over the Labor Day week-end. Even though we lost and it was 86 degrees, we still had a great time. I love going Downtown Detroit, the city is always so much fun. We had a few beers, had some hot dogs and some frozen lemon aid. It was a fun afternoon ball game.

Photo: Hot day at comerica

We also spent time with our friends having a few beers at a backyard birthday party. I do love beer. Another reason I am happy I won the Rebootizer, I could use a detox plan after indulging on so many festive foods and drinks this summer. It really has been the summer of fun.

I threw in this picture. I love this picture. It was taken on a houseboat trip I took in August. There was 30 people on this trip and all us girls got together and all piled on a floating island with our drinks and took tons of pictures, this picture happens to be my favorite. So much fun. Girl Power.

I included this picture because it’s pretty and I love water lilies.

Killian and Stuart say Hi! See my Orange stripped sweater with the Orange tissue tee, told ya I am loving Orange right now.

How cute are my fur babies? They look freaked out in this picture, but man I just love their little faces. They make my heart go Pitter Patter.
