So this grumpy little guy fell out of his nest early. He perched himself on the Concrete Turtle that my Stuart loves to jump on. Looks like Big T has a new friend. Fearing my dogs would get him, I went and grabbed my gardening gloves, put down my camera and went over to grab him and move him to a safer place.

So here’s what happened. I picked little grumpy up and was immediately attacked by both his parents. It scared the heck right out of me. I am so glad I had my hair up in a bun on the top of my head, because these Robins went straight for my head and one of them actually hit me in the bun on my head. Flash backs to one of my first horror movie The Birds came streaming back….But I was on a mission to move this little one for his own safety.

It did not bother them when I was taking his picture, I actually did not even see them or hear them anywhere near me, but once I had him in my hands they pounced on me. I was able to get him into the front yard and placed him near a bush and he hopped under it and I ran back into the back yard. They were flying down on me and making enough noise to alert the entire neighborhood. I have rescued birds before, but have never been attacked by them, I guess there is a first for everything. I’d do it again, I will just wear my motorcycle helmet next time!

Grumpy hung out in my front yard for the next few days, with mom and dad staying very close and keeping an eye out for me. I have not seen him since so I like to imagine him flying high and telling stories of the human he escaped from.

So anyway, enough with the bird stories for now, and onto some food talk.

I made a steak, egg, blue cheese and brussels salad. I roasted the brussels on the grill for 20 minutes, fried the egg and used some pre-cooked fajita steak meat to create this really fun dinner. Along with the salad I also made an easy dressing, I took A-1 steak sauce, a splash of balsamic vinegar and Dijon mustard and mixed it all together and lightly coated the lettuce with it. I had no idea what I was setting out to make, but it sure did turn out well. Plus the toasted pita squares really added to the meal.

Sometimes the meals thrown together on the fly are the best. I smashed it all up together and dug in.

Now back to some more bird news. So during a recent visit with the chickens at my neighbors farm, I left with a parting gift.

Poison Ivy. I was visiting my Lovely Ladies and pulled some weeds in the coop that seemed to be growing like crazy. I did have gloves on, but when I stacked up the weeds in my arms to move out of the coop, I had on short sleeves and ended up getting poison ivy on my upper arms by my biceps. Within 5 minutes I knew I came into contact with something because my arms were on fire. So I went to my doctor and got a cortisone shot and some cream to help with the itching. What is it with birds and me lately?

Sometimes you have to take the good and the bad. It makes me think of the theme song from the Facts of Life TV show. Back in the day, that was my favorite show. That show ran from 1979 to 1988. I seriously grew up watching that show. I really did learn the Facts of Life from those girls. Well I’m off, hope you have a great day free from attacking birds and poison ivy plants.

Question of the Day:  Have you ever had poison ivy? I sure hope I never get it again.

Have you ever made something that made you so happy, you could not stop smiling? Well look at what has me smiling!

The weather has been getting so nice, and I love it. I like hot weather, I do not like to be cold. Funny coming from Michigan seeing how cold our weather gets. We hit 90 degrees on Sunday and it was perfect. One thing I like when its hot is a frozen fruit bar, but when I saw how much they cost this year I decided to make my own. Who knew it was that easy. Just get some molds, cut some fruit and add fruit juice. I picked up these cute molds at the grocery store. The molds are cheaper than a 6 pack of frozen fruit bars.

So I just chopped up some strawberries and threw in some whole blueberries and topped off the molds with fruit juice. That’s it.

Stuck them in the freezer.

Look at these beautiful frozen fruit bars with no added sugar.

I am loving this. So simple, why have I not been making these all my life. I have so many frozen combinations I can not wait to make. This will be a perfect treat on those hot days.

For dinner I made a Buffalo Blue Cheese Chicken Burger. Wow, another keeper. I have been slightly obsessed with using ground chicken and making different burgers lately.

The spicy hot sauce and the sharpness of the blue cheese is so good together.

Even though it’s a big old burger, it’s not heavy at all. It’s actually a nice light meal.  Glad this recipe makes 4 burgers, now I can enjoy it again.

Buffalo Blue Cheese Chicken Burger

Ingredients

Makes 4 Burgers

  • 1/2 cup sliced carrots
  • 1 pound ground white-meat chicken
  • 2 egg whites, lightly beaten
  • 1/2 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 1/4 cup blue cheese, plus more for garnish (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup hot sauce
  • vegetable oil cooking spray
  • 4 buns
  • lettuce for topping

Preparation

Add chicken, egg whites, carrots, breadcrumbs and cheese; mix to combine. Form chicken mixture into four 3/4-inch-thick patties. In a second bowl, stir cornstarch into hot sauce until dissolved; set aside. Coat grill with cooking spray. Grill patties over medium-high heat for 6 minutes; flip and grill 4 minutes more. Brush patties with hot sauce mixture; grill until internal temperature reaches 165°F, about 2 additional minutes. Garnish with cheese and lettuce, if desired.

Question of the Day: Have you ever made your own frozen fruit bars? What’s a good combination of fruit?

Sometimes you just have to give into cravings. I found myself thinking about pizza all day, so since I am on a rest day with  Boot Camp, I decided  let’s have pizza.

This is my favorite pizza, I like to add my own toppings to it though, I find that when you get the standard pepperoni pizza, it’s always to greasy, so I add my own Turkey Pepperoni.  Plus this pizza is not that bad, it’s got a decent amount of protein in each serving.

Pizza night is always a favorite around here, we don’t have Pizza Night that often, but when we do, we really do it big.  This ended up being Pizza and a Lazy Day.

Put together a Dole Spinach Salad Bag.

Lots of cherries, nuts and blue cheese included in this mix. It has this amazing white balsamic vinaigrette dressing.

Plus a few pieces of California Rolls, this really ended up being a great meal.

Pizza is done and I am off to eat it.

Hope you had a wonderful weekend.

Question of the Day: What’s you favorite pizza topping?

This here is MI Kinda Salad. Well it’s really called a Michigan Salad, but MI works for me. This salad is loaded with apples, cherries, blue cheese and has Michigan Honey is in the dressing. I personally love this salad and recreate it at home as often as I can, although I have never tried to make the dressing so I’m hoping I get it right.

Ingredients

  • 3 Teaspoons Honey
  • 1/4 Cup Red Wine Vinegar
  • 1/2 cup Oil
  • 3 Tablespoons Lemon Juice
  • Salt and Pepper to Taste
For the salad, I just used a big bag of greens, like a spring mix with spinach.
I grabbed some cherries, some blue cheese and some sunflower seeds.

I thinly slice an apple.

Mixed it all together and added the dressing.

The salad was perfect, the dressing needs a little work, the vinegar was just too strong for my taste.  So next time I am going to try a different recipe for the dressing, and hopefully I will have a fresh bag of Michigan cherries and will recreate the perfect Michigan Salad.
Question of the Day: Do you make your own dressing or do you buy yours?
